Great work with some new faces on the podium. We are in a cyclical period. Its a great chance for the new group of athletes from the team to step up and fill their places!! As well as being some great pbs by lots of athletes yesterday, there were also 6 athletes just outside the podium in the top 5....Keep it up
Madeleine Oldfield Race Report
Gatorade Victorian Olympic Distance Champs
On Sunday 10th January I competed in Race #3 of the Gatorade Triathlon Series, which combined as the Victorian Olympic Distance Champs. I had put in a very solid block of training in Tasmania over Christmas so was keen to race well and get a good result in my first triathlon for 2010.
The conditions were ideal, with blue skies and little wind. The race kicked off at 7am with a 1500m wetsuit swim off Sandringham. I had one of my best swims to date and exited the water with the lead girls. I knew that I had to have a super fast transition if I were to make it in the lead bunch on the bike. This is where the hill run up to transition worked in my favour, and I managed to pull away from a few of the girls and entered the 40km bike course with about a 200m lead. At the 5km mark of the bike I was caught by Elly Franks and she went powering past creating a small lead, but I knew that if I wanted to be in the mix at the end of the day I had to be with her on the bike. I put my head down and managed to get back on. We worked together to increase our lead on the chase bunch.
Entering T2 we had about a 5 minute lead on the bunch behind, which was the ideal situation. I felt really good after the bike and managed to put in a strong run over the 10km course. I ended up finishing first place overall for the third year in a row and Victorian Olympic Distance Champion.
Thanks to race day support from Melbourne Tri Club, Brooks, Peak Bike Hub, Malvern Star and of course Mum!

Well there were onerous forecasts of 40deg weather for Sunday Following the 40+dgree day of 2006, I think everyone was a little spooked and expecting the worst.
Bike check in was the day before, and I had to be there to conduct a race seminar for athletes as part of our duties as sponsor of the event. One bit of news I did need to break was it was unlikely to be a wetsuit swim, as it was 25.2deg, which generally send shivers down the spine of any triathlete.
Trying to avoid sunstroke after 4hrs of official duties, I finally settled back at Quest Shepparton to organize my race day gear and watch some Foxtel. Later that day our team had a lovely dinner at the local pasta restaurant, before I retired for the night, thankfully to a room with the best air conditioning!
Race morning arrived with some sparse cloud cover and it was cooler than expected. The hustle of race morning
ensued. The same old faces, and lots of new ones too greeted me as I arrived at T1.It was confirmed a non wetsuit swim, which in a way saved us from wrestling with our lube and suits, leaving more time to prepare and get to the start line.
I had an ok start to the swim, but did struggle without my favourite swimming buddy the wetsuit. I had some ideas to alleviate the problem of less floatation, head down more and finish the stroke. It seemed to work when I had time to
remember it, in-between dodging swimmers.
Onto the bike, my assistant Coach Cambell Maffett would have been proud of my T1effort! Pretty slick for an old fella, well slick for me anyway.
With a recently tweaked bike setup, my Giant Advanced TT courtesy of CBD Cycles felt great. Had a solid couple of bike laps, on the third I backed it off a bit, spinning and eating, as I was a little underdone coming in and wanted to give myself a chance on the run. And as we all know we ride for show and run for dough in the longer events.
First 5k of the run was horrible, must do some more aero riding fozzy!! I finally found my run rhythm and saw lots of our team out there looking strong. The spectators and volunteers were fantastic along the route, and you always feel like the race has the support of the local community. You can always count on Peter Guy and Garry Leed to put on the most organized and best run Half Ironman event in Australia! Well done Shepp Tri Club.
Finished solidly in a time of 4:18hrs, 3rd in my age. I was pretty happy with it for the amount of preparation that had gone into it. Now there is my kick up the pants, time to get cracking, looking forward to Ironman Port Mac and hopefully Hawaii.
Great effort by all the team at Fluid Movements and the Melbourne Tri Club. We had 37 athletes competing over the Half and Hexman events. Seven podiums finishes. So a great day all round.
Special thanks to our teams program partners, AusBank, CBD Cycles, Brunettis, Active Feet, SYS and our great association with the Melbourne Tri Club, and to David Cutajar who lugged the tent up for us to use, thanks god for some shade!!
Thanks
Sean Foster
Well done to Tamara Allen on winning her age group in the Open Water 3km swim on the weekend. Also Madeleine Oldfield won her age group in a big PB.
The final race of the Latrobe Valley winter triathlon series was held yesterday at Hazelwood Pondage. I was very keen to have a hard hit-out before the Noosa Triathlon which is in two weeks time, so this race was perfect timing. I was unsure how I would go since I had a few weeks rest after the World Champs. However I have just completed a solid and consistent month of training, so I was hoping to race well. The race distances were 1500m swim, 36km cycle and 9km run. I quickly found a good rhythm in the swim and managed to hold on to this for the whole the race. This was the first race on my new Malvern Star Oppy TT and it sure felt super fast! Entering the run I was feeling really strong and was able to push the pace right up to the finish. I ended up 1st female and managed to take a few minutes off my time from the previous Hazelwood Tri which was held a few months ago. I was really happy with my result and it has given me the confidence I need to race well in Noosa.
Well done to Jeremy Drake (Fluid Pro Team) who raced in the Olympic Distance on 17/10- Jeremy finished 12th overall in a time of 1:53:39

'train to race'
Race Report - Madeleine Oldfield MTC/Fluid Pro Team
At the beginning of last season my goal was to gain selection in the Australian team to compete at the 2009 World Triathlon Championships on the Gold Coast. After competing in a number of qualifying events throughout the season I was selected in the team in the 20-24 year age group category. Once I had made the team my aim for the year was to train as hard as I could and put all my energy and focus into making certain I would be in the best shape possible come September. I new that I didn't want to just go to the World Champs to finish, but I wanted to race the best I had
ever raced. So in April I set about my journey of putting triathlon as my first priority and focus. Everyday I would get up and train with my mind focused on that one day in September (this year unfortunately it wasn't to be Hawthorn in the AFL Grand Final, but a triathlon race on the Gold Coast!). I was determined to put in100% effort in all aspects of my preparation so that once I was on the start line I knew I had done everything possible to be ready to race and race well.
I arrived up on the Gold Coast four days before the race. There was a certain buzz in the air with a massive few days of triathlon coming up, however I tried to stay relaxed and treat the race like any other. In the few days leading up to the race my legs felt pretty sore and tight, but after a few massages and lots of stretching I was starting to feel pretty good. The evening before race day I went down to the beach to do my usual pre-race stretching and as I was walking home I found a tiny Australian flag buried in the sand that had printed on it "the best of all". I'm not normally superstitious, but took this as a sign that I was going to race well the next day!
The night before my race Supercoach Sean sent me a text that simply read "good prep, be confident, no regrets." These six words were to become a pretty important part of my race and I applied them to each discipline of triathlon. During the swim warm-up I focused on how well I had trained over the past six months and how my consistent
preparation would pay off. During the cycle I focused on staying confident and believing in myself, and the run was all about going out and running as hard as I could and finish off the race with no regrets. All of these things I managed to do.
At 4am on race day morning I was wide awake as the nerves were starting to kick in, so it was time to get up! My wave start was at 7.08am. The whole morning I was just focused on staying relaxed and enjoying the experience. At the start line I concentrated on doing my own thing and not worrying about anyone around me, after all I had no control over any of the other competitors in my race.
The swim start was one of the roughest I have experienced, however I am now learning how to be rough back so I was able to sort my self out pretty quickly and get into a good rhythm. I exited the swim in about 13th place, and managed to pick up a few more places in transition. The bike course consisted of 2 laps on a flat course. My new Malvern Star Oppy felt awesome and we managed to work well together and ride through some the field. I was feeling good during the final few kilometers of the bike which was a good sign for the upcoming run. Once on the run course I had no idea of my placing. It was starting to get pretty hot; however I was feeling strong and was determined to run as hard as I could. The cheering from the crowd of "go Aussie" and "way to go girlfriend!" from the Americans made the pain seem less and kept me going. When I crossed the finish line I was spent. I had no idea of how I'd placed but was hoping for maybe top 15. When I eventually found out I came 3rd it was a massive surprise! It was a huge relief to be finished knowing that all of my hard work had paid off. Prior to the event I had no idea of how I was going to go and I was sometimes a bit nervous that all my training might be for nothing. However I now know that hard work, consistency and persistence really does pay off.
I have had the most fun of my life this year while training for this race. Spending my days swimming, cycling, running, eating and sleeping is the best, however it definitely wouldn't be possible with out the support of a huge number of
people. So I would like to say a big thank you to Supercoach Sean and everyone at Fluid Movements/MTC, you all make training so much easier and fun! Thanks to my sponsors Peak Bike Hub, Pacific Brands, Malvern Star, Giro and Brooks, I am so lucky to receive the huge amount of support that I do. Thanks to Steve, Laura, Kate Chloe and Sam. And the biggest thank you to my Mum and Dad, you are the best!
Until next time!
Madelein
Congratulations to Madeleine Oldfield from the team at South Yarra Sports on her amazing effort at the Gold Coast ITU World Championships!
Race Report - Sean Foster/Fluid Movements Coach
The team from Fluid Triathlon and MTC competed at our local club duathlon on the weekend. The venue was Kew Blvd, a challenging course with lots of hills. Thankfully the weather gods were smiling on us as around 200athletes lined up for the sprint and dash duathlon events. There were around 36 competing from MTC and Fluid Triathlon, including Leon Griffen, 2006 World Duathlon Champion.
We had all been looking forward to a hard training race and to support the club, and we certainly got that.
With the first 150m of the race uphill, we knew it would not be easy. The first run was a real heart starter, with the field getting away well. The hilly course made for some interesting competition, with lots of hills of varying lengths and
difficulty. This made it tough to get a rhythm going on the first run, and I was certainly under the pump coming into transition.
The bike course was on the boulevard circuit. There were 2 to 4laps of a 5k loop, which included 2 of the biggest hills of Kew in each lap, bugger you HP : ). Coming in at the end of the bike, the legs were burning from all those hills and my left calf went into full cramp as I put my foot on top of the shoe.. Ouch!!
Onto the final run of 3km, I knew my lack of fitness would make this hurt, a lot. I don't think I caught my breath the whole second run, but with Sasha, a TVDP junior breathing down my neck the final k, my old man pride kicked in, and I finished hard to keep my dignity in check!
Thanks so much to MTC for their organisation, my sponsors including South Yarra Sport who provide our squad training facilties of the highest level, CBD Cycles for the great Giant TT bike, the volunteers, supporters and all the guys that raced were awesome. The race will come back bigger and better next year once the word gets out!
